Ko Samui, Thailand
The second-largest island in Thailand known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest. Ko Samui is where Janine got stung by a jellyfish for the very first time… while Gerome was off in the ocean snorkelling on his own.
Travelling to Ko Samui
Getting to Ko Samui requires multiple flights. See below for more information about getting to Ko Samui. The island is home to one of the most unique airports you’ll ever land in.
Things to do
Ko Samui has so much to offer. From beaches and night markets, to elephant sanctuaries, hikes, and Muay Thai stadiums. You can even kick back, relax, and read a book. Here are ideas we like, and we think you’ll like them too.
There are two main airports in Bangkok, however the best flights to Ko Samui are from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). Bangkok Airways is pretty much your only option for flights to and from the island.
Bangkok Airways owns the Ko Samui airport, which is why they are your only option. The flight is 1 hour and 20 min from Bangkok (BKK).
Once you arrive in Ko Samui, the venue is just a short drive from the airport. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
Getting to the venue: The venue is located approximately 19 km away and is about a 30 minutes drive from the airport via the resort limousine or a local taxi.
With so much to offer, you’re going to find yourself exploring the island. Here are a few ways you can get around the island:
Songthaews aka shared pick-up taxis (costs around 20-100 THB per trip, depending on distance)
– What: Open-sided trucks converted into shared taxis. Find them on main roads or near popular attractions.
– Best for: Budget-friendly travel around the island.
Taxis (costs around 300 THB for short rides)
– What: These are taxis run on a meter. Always negotiate and ask for the meter to run. Drivers often prefer to negotiate a flat rate.
– Best for: Direct rides to specific destinations or at night when Songthaews are less frequent.
Motorbike Taxis (starts at 50-100 THB)
– What: Imagine a taxi… but on a motorbike.
– Best for: Solo travellers and short rides to nearby places.
Private Transfers (typically 500-1,500 THB, depending on distance and vehicle type)
– What: Pre-arranged transfers via vans or cars.
– Best for: Large groups, airport pick-ups/drop-offs. There is an option to hire for the driver for a day.
Rental Options
– Motorbikes: Costs around 150-300 THB per day. Great for exploring and being adventurous. Ensure you have a valid license and wear a helmet!
– Cars: Starts at 800-1,200 THB per day. Ideal for families or longer drives around the island.
– Bicycles: Costs around 50-100 THB/day. Suitable for exploring flat areas like Fisherman’s Village or quiet beaches.
Ride Sharing Apps
While there are ride sharing apps available (Grab & Bolt) in Thailand, the number of available rides is fairly small in Samui. Prices are also higher than the options listed above.
Samui Elephant Sanctuary Bophut
This sanctuary is home to 16 rescued elephants where you can feed the elephants and walk with them. We might be a little biased, but we’d say no trip to Thailand is complete without a visit to an Elephant Sanctuary—after all, we got engaged at one!
Cooking Classes
Taking a cooking class is one of our favourite things to do together when we’re travelling. From making Tagines in Morocco, Paellas in Barcelona, Handmade Corn Tortillas in Mexico and traditional Thai dishes in Chiang Mai. We can’t recommend this experience enough!
Watch Muay Thai at a Stadium
When you’re in Rome, do as the… wait hold on. You’re in Thailand – so now’s your chance to watch live Muay Thai fights. Watch the best Thai fighters on the island and even farangs (foreigners) compete against each other! There are 3 arenas in Ko Samui: Phetchbuncha, Chaweng Stadium, and Samui International Stadium. Seats typically cost 1,500THB.
Central Festival Samui
Explore the largest lifestyle shopping complex on Samui, featuring a variety of retail shops, delicious dining options, a movie theatre, and a kids’ playground. It’s the perfect spot for a family outing or some retail therapy. This is a “theme mall” that incorporates the lifestyle and way of life that Samui has to offer.
Fisherman’s Village
Once a thriving fishing community, Fisherman’s Village is now a lively walking street with rustic shophouses turned into eateries, shops, and beach bars. The village has a weekly night market, which is a must-go. You’ll find street food, handcrafted souvenirs, and live entertainment. Don’t miss the fresh seafood and a scoop of homemade coconut ice cream.
Lamai Night Market
Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Lamai’s bustling streets. On one side, discover local clothing and handicrafts, while on the other, enjoy a tempting array of street food. The Lamai Night Market is considered a more laid-back atmosphere. If you want a night market experience without the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect spot for you.
Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha)
Visit this iconic 12-meter-tall statue that overlooks the northern coast and Koh Phangan—a must-see landmark for breathtaking views and serene vibes.
